How to Calm Negative Thoughts With Meditation

Kick Negative Thoughts to the Curb by Meditating

Every human has experienced the side effects of negative thoughts and even the physical manifestations caused by it. Stress in our culture has become a way of life. It’s termed as “normal” or a part of who we are. Whilst I understand where this is coming from, I don’t believe it.

Even in the most stressful times, we can meditate. If we can quiet our minds enough, we can slow our thinking down taking us to a calm, relaxed state and bringing us to a state of wellbeing. From this state, you’ll feel relief, as if you hit the ‘reset’ button on life.

Meditation can make you feel that whatever you are worrying about isn’t so bad after all. And really, worry is just another word for stress. It’s really just a perception shift.

Why Meditate?

  • It lets you see the situations in your life for what they really are. It’s like turning on the light in a closet to see that the big scary Boogey Man was never there!
  • It frees your mind to create solutions to whatever you are worrying about. Your brain isn’t wasting its precious energy looking at the problems.
  • You feel relaxed, empowered and in control of your life.

The new perspective allows you to see whatever you were worrying about for what it REALLY is. It rarely turns out to be as big of a deal as you had imagined. It was an illusion that was distorting your perspective!

Haven’t you ever noticed that so many of the things you worried about in the past either a.) never came into fruition or b.) weren’t as bad as you had imagined it? Meditation lets you see that quicker and saves you from worrying in the first place.

It can help you realize how unnecessary and unrealistic the negative thoughts were. The emotion behind the stress is basically a lie!

So, how can stress be ‘normal’ and who we are if it’s just a lie?

I find that when I meditate, my mind isn’t so busy focusing on whats wrong; it’s free to focus on solutions. It doesn’t necessarily mean that I get all of the answers, but it does bring me closer to the solution. Most importantly, I feel better and more in control of my life.

That’s who we really are!

5 Easy Meditations for Negative Thinking

  • You can use easy breathing exercises by inhaling and exhaling slowly for 10 minutes.
  • You can focus on an object such as a candle, the moon, a flowing Search etc.
  • Search for ‘guided meditation’ on YouTube. There are countless meditations and they are free!
  • Focus on the space between the thoughts. Your mind isn’t thinking a thought every nanosecond of every day. Notice the space between a thought ending and a new one being formed.
  • Take a walking meditation in nature and simply focus on your footsteps moving on the land. Feel every sensation: the pressure of your feet on the earth (does it bounce back slightly? is it firm?), the sound of your footsteps, the temperature of the air, etc.
