You can’t have an ordinary Halloween!

Halloween is my favorite holiday, but as I’ve gotten older, I don’t care to celebrate it the same way I did when I was younger. The commercialization of the holiday just doesn’t do it for me and I haven’t dressed up in years. I thought about how I can still honor the holiday while pampering myself and making it soulful.

Here are five ways you can incorporate an intentional practice for a high-vibe Halloween.

01. Celebrating Samhain

Getting to the roots of the holiday makes the event much more meaningful. Halloween was adopted from its Celtic roots in Ireland. Known as Samhain, it’s the time between October 31 and November 1 when the year is at its middle point between the lighter half (summer) and the darker half (winter). This marks the exact balance between light and dark. It’s believed that this is the time when the veil is the thinnest between the physical and the spiritual world. The Celtics honored this by giving offerings to their loved ones who have crossed over while warding off any negative spirits who try to enter this plane.

Connecting with the history helps me to wade through the superficial celebrations of Halloween that we now celebrate in the U.S. It’s a powerful reminder that at its core, this is a spiritual holiday.

With even easier access to the spirit world, create a dialogue with your loved ones on the other side for clarity on any questions you have about your life or guidance on anything that has been weighing on your heart.

Easy Tips to Speak with Your Spirit Guides on Samhain:

  • Before attempting to connect, calm your mind and body so that you can drop down into your heart.  Meditation and deep breathing are recommended as they allow the brain to go into a calm, theta state.
  • State your intention of what you want to receive while also giving gratitude for any insights you receive.
  • One way to connect with your guides is through journaling. You can simply write the situation(s) that has been weighing on your heart or simply ask questions in your journal. Or you can try automatic writing (channeling through writing). Then, wait for the quiet, inner voice to speak to you. This can come through sensations in the body, emotions, images, memories, smells or thoughts appearing.
  • Another way to connect is through your dreams. Write your questions or intentions on a piece of paper. Pray or set the intention that your guides will answer your questions through your dreams. Ask them to help you to remember the messages when you wake up. The next morning, write down any insights you received.
  • You can also ask your guides to show you signs and symbols throughout your day to a question you have. Ask them to make the message clear and easy to understand. Or give it parameters by assigning an image to the answer. For example, an old friend wanted to know if she should accept a new job that was offered to her. She told her guides that if it would be for her highest and best good, to please show her owls throughout her day (her favorite animal). The next day she saw 3 owls: one on a stranger’s shirt, one on a commercial and one in a book!

02. Honoring Your Ancestors

Just as the Celtics, the Mexicans celebrate this time of the year by honoring their ancestors in El Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It’s a fantastic way to give closure and healing to those who are grieving over the loss of a loved one. It’s also a fantastic way to appreciate and honor the life that we do have

How to Honor You Ancestors:

  • Set an extra meal at the dinner table for your deceased family member(s) to eat with you.
  • Create an altar with momentos, photos and any of the favorite items of your loved ones who’ve crossed over.
  • Share stories and photos with family members about loved ones who’ve crossed over. Celebrate their life!
  • Visit the cemetery to decorate the graves of your loved ones with flowers, candles, letters and their favorite foods/items.
  • Talk to your ancestors and thank them for the life they gave you and the lessons and blessings you inherited from them. Recognize that your existence is the answer to their prayers.

03. Creating a Ritual

Rituals are tangible anchors telling our subconscious and conscious minds that we’re ready to connect with our inner self. If you already have one, I suggest modifying it a bit so that your mind knows that this is a special day.

Here are Some Ritual Ideas:

  • Recite a special prayer.
  • Light reiki-infused candles.
  • Create a bonfire and invite your closest friends for a night of dancing and singing.
  • Create a crystal grid with half of the crystals being light colored and the other half being darker color.
  • Use a different incense than you normally use. Some ingredients to consider are cinnamon, juniper, bay leaves, patchouli and rosemary. I prefer getting herbs from Starwest Botanicals because they’ve been around for more than 40 years and rely on in-store and independent laboratory testing.
  • Take a walking meditation in nature to connect with the elements around you and the wisdom they have to share. Feel nature shedding its leaves just as you are “shedding” old energy to prepare for the deep slumber of winter.

Spirits of our ancestors, we call to you,

and tonight we thank you.

04. Harvest Your Year

Being in the thick of autumn, Halloween is a perfect time to take stock of what you have harvested since the beginning of the year. It’s also the last energetic push we get from the universe to create what we want before we hibernate for the winter. Reflect on everything you created and didn’t get to create. Some questions to ponder are:

  • What have you accomplished that you’re proud of?
  • What projects fell to the wayside?
  • What would you like to conjure for the rest of the year?
  • What challenges have come your way? What were the lessons and growth you gained as a result?
  • What is your intention for the rest of the year?
  • What did you think you wanted to do this year, but now realize you no longer need/want and can now be released?

05. Prepare for Hibernation

With the winter around the corner, start to think about what you’ll need to nurture yourself. Try to wrap up any loose hanging projects or relationships that have been straggling in your life. Evaluate where your energy is only halfway in something: a job, relationship, home, a new habit, etc. Then, get really honest and ask yourself if it’s time to move on or if you need to make changes. Is this venture or relationship still worth your time and energy? Release anything which no longer serves you so that you can have extra time and space to slow down and really nurture yourself this winter.
